The RM Elite Academy is about committing to it on our journey to the top.

At this age level, athletes have to understand, that in order to reach the ‘top’ – athletes require a mixture of commitment, enthusiasm and character. It is essential for athletes to know they control their own destiny, no one else.

We expose athletes to once in a lifetime experiences, which aim to change their outlook on life forever.

The classroom experience is the most advanced throughout the entire Academy program; and athlete-training education will focus on the RM Academy subjects of:

High Performance

The RM Coaches challenge the RM Elite Academy athletes to continually develop as adults; and take full responsibility for their own future, both on-and-off the field.

The Journey to the top needs real commitment!

  1. Fundamental Skills

Athletes learn the fundamental skills of the game, which includes:

    • Ball-handling.
    • Handballing.
    • Kicking.

At all levels of football it is critical to develop and maintain a strong foundation for the important skills of the game.

The RM Elite Academy instills the execution of these skills with accuracy, at great speed and under physical pressure, in game like situations.

    Elite Level – Key Focus

Executing the fundamental skills with accuracy, speed and under physical pressure to simulate game intensity.

  2. Between the Lines

RM Coaches progress with game sense education for RM Elite Academy athletes, with a focus on the in-depth topics of the game.

    Elements of focus include:

    • Defending dangerous space
    • Impact or locate.
    • Reading the play
    Today’s Game

The RM Coaches review the current top teams in the AFL; and analyse how they play, using up-to-date stats and current state of the art AFL vision (behind-goal vision).

The athletes are then asked to grasp all the knowledge acquired in these sessions and ‘go out and train like these teams’.

It's important for RM Elite Academy athletes to watch current AFL senior footballers and elite players, analyse what is happening throughout games, then introduce it into their own games.

    Game Situation

A variety of different games are designed for the athletes, which emphasises the education being taught in the classroom and in the training sessions.

  3. The game of Australian rules football is a physical contest. Therefore; learning the proper techniques for some of the most common skills required, is of the highest importance for impact on a game. It is mainly to ensure the athlete’s ability to care for their well-being and that of others in a game situation.

    Elite Level - Key Focus:
    Technique is KING
    • Tackling – control your opponent.
    • Hand to hand combat.
    • Weapon with the ball.
    • 1%ers – 2nd efforts, fending off, repeat efforts.
  4. The experience of the RM Academy Coaches and AFL RM Ambassadors, spans from junior development level, through to AFL. Based on their extensive knowledge and expertise, they have designed specific drills and techniques, to meet the needs of our RM Elite Academy athletes.

High Performance

  1. AFL Conditioning

The RM High Performance coaches expose the RM Elite Academy athletes, to the critical fitness components required to play AFL football.

    These include:

    • Power.
    • Endurance.
    • Strength.
    • Speed.

As the Official Talent ID Partner of the AFL we have the know-how to conduct athletic combine testing events – gaining a snapshot of each athlete’s physical state and ability. This provides the RM Coaches with a better understanding of how to train the individual athlete to improve.

    Skills Conditioning

In conjunction with the skills program, the RM High Performance coaches conduct a conditioning program, which aims to identify the required physical needs for the specific skills sessions.

    Self-review and Reflection

The RM Coaches review the impact of athletes ‘self-reviewing and reflecting’ on their performances, at training and in games. Then putting actions in place to encourage improvement.

  2. The Official Talent ID Partner of the AFL

In January, we introduce the athletes to regulated physical combine testing, which is currently conducted at AFL and TAC Cup level.

It is important to educate each athlete on the simple techniques of each physical test (testing metric); and give them an advantage on understanding the levels they need to reach.

“I feel like I have a head start when it comes to testing. I am so well prepared and rehearsed, which is what recruiters look out for, thanks to the practice I have had at RM Academy combines and camps.”

    Callum Porter
Current RM Elite Academy athlete (sixth year with the Academy); and
Vice Captain for Gippsland Power FC (TAC Cup).

RM Academy athletes have the additional opportunity to attend all RM combine testing events (public testing outside the RM Academy program), where they will be able to re-test throughout the year. Rookie Me is also the Official Talent ID Partner of the AFL; therefore, understanding the requirements and technique athletes require to obtain optimum results.

  3. A variety of recovery strategies are undertaken at the RM Elite Academy level, which include:

    • Self massage;
    • Stretching;
    • Water-based recovery; and
    • Yoga and mobility;

*The team capitalise on regular opportunities, to educate athletes on the importance of recovery. Introducing a recovery-specific session midway through the program in each school holidays, will aim to increase the sentiment that a healthy mind/body may stem from a strong physical body.

  4. Fuelling to Perform

The RM Nutritionist introduces the RM Elite Academy athletes to the process of fuelling their bodies to perform – week-in and week-out, at training and as well as on game day. The athletes receive education on what type of food is more beneficial to them and when it should be consumed. The impact of making the right food choices allows athletes the opportunity to achieve enhanced energy levels.

  1. The team prioritises personal development and growth of self-worth, this is an important theme throughout the curriculum – providing the chance for every athlete in the Junior, Pro and Elite programs, to IGNITE their leadership qualities and impact the group.

Learning to be a better leader can be difficult in some cases, it is about having an opportunity… to speak up and communicate, or the chance to answer a question, or work through a problem in a group. These scenarios help ignite leadership within athletes.

  2. Trademarking

What are the trademarks of our team? As a group of dedicated Elite athletes we discuss the behaviors and actions that we all commit to work to as a part of the RM Team for season 2018.

It is an opportunity to teach these young athletes the importance of working within a group and looking outside yourself to help others achieve.

These behaviors and actions are displayed regularly throughout the camps and will be a strong part of the RM year.

  3. Goal Setting

Goal setting is designed around the five key areas of the life of a footballer (environment).

    • On field.
    • Off field.
    • At home.
    • At school.
    • In the community.
    Youth Topics

Throughout the RM Academy journey; each athlete is challenged, to step outside his or her comfort-zone – and listen to a range of guest speakers addressing issues, which young athletes may face, as they mature.
For the RM Elite Academy athletes, the RM Coaches have selected topics, which will be prominent and relevant in their life. By addressing these topics, we aim to help equip our athletes with significant tools, both on-and-off the field.

    These topics include:

    • Dealing with adversity; and
    • Social media and protecting your brand.
    • Discrimination in sport; and
    • Choices and consequences.
    Behavioural Assessment

The RM Coaches assess our RM Elite Academy athletes’ behavioural traits, and study how they interact in group situations. This identifies extroverted (outgoing and loud) or introverted (reserved and quietly spoken) athletes.

The RM Elite Academy athletes are young adults, whom all play a different role in a group situation, we aim to help you identify specific areas, in which the RM Coaches are able to assist you with techniques to improve your overall social impact in a group.

This always proves to be a favourite camp amongst athletes – and be warned there are a few challenges thrown in along the way making it an exciting event!

  3. Listening to a current AFL player’s personal journey is a great learning experience, for any young athlete. They have the chance to understand what these mentors were doing at the same age (as the RM Academy athletes) in order to reach their goals.

  4. The carnival event is an anticipated game experience, where athletes present their skills and knowledge learned over the RM Academy program’s duration.

An external squad is invited to compete against our RM Elite Academy athletes in an authentic AFL environment, with umpires, official trainers and AFL guests (who assist), with this unique game-day experience.

  5. Each athlete will have access to our coaches for advice and mentoring throughout the year. We are committed to impact every athlete, both on-and-off the field with constant communication and footy chat through the online Rookie Me System.

  6. Each athlete will create a player profile, containing his or her comparable data on the Rookie Me online system.

The system allows RM Academy athletes to understand what realistic levels and benchmarks they need to reach; as growing and developing athletes, by having the ability to compare against fellow athletes of the same age, position and gender.

Compare yourself against current AFL stars like Pendles (Scott Pendlebury), Matty Kreuzer and recent No.1 Draft Pick, Andrew McGrath, whose stats are already on the system!

  1. An introduction to the RM Elite Academy, where we dive straight into our 3 subjects of Skills, High Performance and Leadership.

At this time of year, it is all about securing a foundation of fitness, as well as skill and having a focus to achieve are all critical to sustain a high level for the year ahead.

We will be based out of an ELITE training facility to give ourselves the best possible start to the year.

  2. The athletes are lead through a simulated AFL preseason schedule at a mystery venue in Victoria, which will only be revealed to athletes at a later date!

We delve into our LEADERSHIP program with teamwork and camaraderie being big themes at this unique event. We expose athletes to a Youth Topic with a guest speaker who will challenge each athlete to reflect. Advance our COMBAT SKILLS where technique is KING with proper technique in different areas of combat and controlling your opponent. The GAME SENSE activities take us deeper into the 3 Phases of the game, looking at all areas, and what we are doing in all facets of the game, whether I have the ball or it's down the other end of the field.

This one is jam packed, and created to be a once in a lifetime experience. Be READY to step well and truly out of your comfort zone!

  3. Athletes will have access to train at the Hawthorn Football Club, where they are able to experience the life of an AFL player, using the venue as if they are a currently listed player.

As it is in the middle of the season, athletes will focus heavily on GAME SENSE training, where we will explore current AFL game trends; and how the best are doing it in the year 2019. We return for more fundamental repetition and Kicking School as we keep pushing to develop the key skills of the game.

1 day will be spent at our RM HQ in Seaford, and 1 day spent at HFC.

  4. Celebration

The final camp of the year gives us a chance to tie everything together from a big season of RM Elite Academy. We keep everyone in age specific groups, and reflect on what we have learnt, look ahead to the off-season for things to watch out for and opportunities ahead, then bring it all together in a carnival to see what team comes out on top.
